MC2 STEM - Covid-19 Closure Update
FAQs for Students & Parents
All of this information could change based on updates from Governor DeWine. We've received so many great questions from students and parents, that we wanted to share the list here!
Q: When will we come back to school?
A: Sadly, we will not return to school this school year. We have no information regarding adjusted start dates for next school year, but we will keep you posted of all changes.
Q: Why did I get 2 report cards?
A: I accidentally sent the math grades out in place of the Science grades on the report cards issued last week, the report card you received today was the corrected/accurate report card.
Q: My report card shows “incomplete” for some classes I never even took, why is that?
A: We usually embed World History, Financial Literacy, Health, and Art into projects we do in the 4th quarters. Because we are not going to be in school during the 4th quarter, you have the option of completing the online course or testing out of it. These credits are always offered online, you now have the opportunity to take them early instead of doing them during your 4th quarter capstone.
Q: Will I have new assignments in my current classes?
A: NO. You will not receive NEW assignments until you return to school. Your focus should be completing mastery and the work you were assigned earlier this year. BUT, you SHOULD continue to learn. Many teachers are posting new learning opportunities on your google classrooms and learning packets are available at all food pick-up sites if you are able to get to them. Keep challenging yourself to learn more, it’s what MANIACS DO! If/when we return to school, your assignments will be modified.
Q: I keep looking for new assignments on Google Classroom, but I don’t see any?
A: Again, You will not receive NEW assignments until you return to school. You should review your grades on Google Classroom and go back to the assignments that are incomplete or below a 70 and re-do them. If you are confused about anything, please contact that teacher specifically for help.
Q: How can I do new assignments if I don’t have a computer/internet?
A: We understand not everyone has access to computer/internet at this time. This is the reason that we are not issuing NEW learning packets but making support information available to you instead. We are working on a plan to help you complete what you need to do anyway by getting those of you who do not have computers connected through a loan-out program. Please be patient as we work to tackle this problem. We will not hold your lack of access against you in any way.
Q: Will I have mastery to do?
A: Yes. Your focus should be completing mastery at this time. You will receive a list of EXACTLY what needs to be done on Monday via email. This will be sent to student google classroom email addresses.
Q: How can I do mastery if I don’t have a computer/internet?
A: Again, we understand not everyone has access to computer/internet at this time. We are working on a plan to help you complete what you need to do anyway. Please be patient as we work to tackle this problem. We will not hold your lack of access against you in anyway.
Q: What do I do if I need help with an assignment?
A: Email, text, or call myself or your teachers. Their email addresses are listed below. Please copy me on emails so I can ensure your teachers are following up. For this year's classes, you have to login to your google classroom and complete any missing assignments you may have. If you are not sure what you have to do for this year's classes, please email your teachers directly.
For previous years classes, you can go to the mastery site and either complete the course, or complete exams.
Q: I’ve seen on the news that some schools are having kids attend Zoom Meetings or other digital meetings, why aren’t we?
A: Many teachers have started to record video sessions and connect with students in other innovative ways like Instagram, SnapChat, and more! The reality is, many students are without access to computers, we cannot hold students all to the same standard. We are doing everything we can right now and we are exploring new options every day!
Q: Am I allowed to come to school to get work?
Q: Should I tell you if I have COVID-19 (suspected or confirmed)?
A: You can, but you do not have to. That is your private medical history and your doctors and the CDC will provide guidance on who you need to contact.
Q: Can I follow you on Social Media?
MC2 STEM Snap Chat- mc2stem
MC2 STEM Instagram - MC2Maniac
MC2 STEM Twitter- @MC2STEMHigh
MC2 STEM Facebook- @mc2stemhighschool
Q: What am I supposed to be doing right now?
A: Stay Healthy. Learn through enrichment. Do Mastery.
Q: When can I clean out my locker?
A: CMSD is bringing cleaners and custodians back to the buildings this week to ensure all safety precautions are in place prior to any pick-up of items. We will notify you via email and phone call informing you of a date and time for pickup. Stay tuned.
Q: I never got a computer, can I still get one?
A: Short answer- not right now. Long answer- when we left school, we did some initial surveys by phone, text, and email trying to get accurate information on your needs. “Free computers” are not being provided, but we did loan out all of our existing computers in the buildings (the students can tell you about the condition of those computers…) For any student who stated they were in need of a computer, we contacted and made arrangements for pickup. For families that were unable to pick up, we made three rounds of deliveries. At this point, we are out of computers and unable to provide anymore, however, we did place an order for new computers. Hopefully, those will be received soon and we can provide even more devices.
Q: I needed a computer and nobody ever contacted me?
A: I’m sorry if this happened. There are two possible reasons. 1. When the digital survey was sent, it is possible whomever filled it out incorrectly indicated that you did not need a device. 2. You may have been unreachable, we called every number we had in our system and on the emergency forms, there were a few families that we were never able to reach. Please make sure your contact information is up-to-date and you answer any calls from our district (They are always numbers that begin with “216-838”)
Q: It doesn’t seem fair that some people got a computer and others did not?
A: I couldn’t agree more. Educational funding is being greatly impacted by the coronavirus. How can you help? Please consider contacting your member of the House of Representatives and Ohio Senators Sherrod Brown and Rob Portman, advocating for their support of a federal stimulus bill for education. Please also consider sharing this information with others you know, whether they have children or not, so they too can advocate on our behalf.
To find and contact your representative, click here: https://www.house.gov/representatives/find-your-representative.
To contact Senator Sherrod Brown, click here: https://www.brown.senate.gov/
To contact Senator Rob Portman, click here: https://www.portman.senate.gov/
Whether you choose to advocate or not is a personal choice. Regardless of what you decide, thank you for the work you do for our students, for their families and caregivers, and for your fellow educators every day! You are appreciated!
Q: What is going to happen next school year?
A: We know it is important to be in school. We are working closely with CMSD leadership and state Government to craft a plan for a safe return to school, but until we know more about the restrictions and the virus, we cannot officially make any decisions. Unfortunately, we just don’t know.
SENIOR ONLY SECTION:
Q: I’m a senior, am I done working?
A: At this time, seniors classes are complete! If you passed all of your classes, you will have no new work. If you failed a class, Ms. Howard and/or Ms. Gordon will contact you on Friday with enrollment information for any classes you need to make up.
Q: Will we still have graduation?
A: Unfortunately, we don’t know at this time. All of this depends on Governor DeWine’s guidance on social distancing. YOU WILL STILL GRADUATE but you may not have a ceremony, or, if you do, it may look different than you anticipated.
Q: Will we still have prom?
A: Again, we don’t know at this time. All of this depends on Governor DeWine’s guidance on social distancing.
Q: How will I complete my portfolio?
A: This is no longer required.
Q: How will I complete my community service?
A: This is no longer required.
Q: Will this affect my college applications?
A: No. You should still be working on this.
Q: Do I still have to do my FAFSA?
A: You can do this from home. https://studentaid.gov/h/apply-for-aid/fafsa You will need a parents help. Ms. Ellis and Ms. Gordon can help you!
Q: Are transcripts and college application materials still being issued?
A: YES. When you submit a request on Naviance it is still being reviewed daily and sent out as soon as possible. Many colleges are also on Closure so they are being very flexible with deadlines.
Q: Should I still be applying for scholarships?
A: YES. Absolutely. Scholarships associations are waiving the need for transcripts at this time because they understand that we cannot access them.
Q: Should I still be applying for the SAY YES Scholarship?
A: YES. Absolutely. SAY YES Scholarships associations are waiving the need for transcripts at this time because they understand that we cannot access them.
Q: Where can I pay my senior dues? Do I still have to pay senior dues?
A: We are not collecting anymore senior dues, and those that have paid will be returned. For tax purposes, we have to work with the CMSD financial department to determine how and when you will receive those back, we are trying to get it as soon as possible!
Q: Will I still get a Cap and Gown?
A: Yes! Don’t worry, we ordered your Caps and Gowns and you will still receive them. Our original graduation date was June 4th, and typically, we receive those items about a week before that. We do not have a shipping date yet, but it will likely be towards the end of May.
Q: Do you have any details on Graduation yet?
A: Nope. It is a work in progress. MC2 STEM High School is trying to organize an event while being mindful of social distancing guidelines. We still plan on celebrating in some way.
