Test Talk for Parents – Understanding Ohio’s State Tests (OST)

Ohio's State Tests measure each child's progress according to Ohio's Learning Standards. These standards tell teachers what their students should know and be able to do at the end of each grade or course. The standards also call for students to apply critical thinking, problem-solving and writing skills to what they are learning. While we still have some time before students are tested, it never hurts to get a head start. Take some time to explore the Ohio State Tests here: http://oh.portal.airast.org/ocba/students-and-families/

Sample OST Question of the Week

Take a chance. How would you do on the OST? Below is an actual question from last years test. Could you pass?

Test: Biology

Grade: 10

A scientist is trying to determine the evolutionary relationships among species with very similar physical characteristics. One method to determine the relationships is by comparing amino acid sequences of proteins.

Why would the scientist compare the amino acid sequences of proteins common to those similar species?

A) Amino acid sequence differences provide evidence of gene flow among the species.

B) Amino acid sequence differences reflect the accumulated differences in the DNA of the species.

C) Amino acid sequence differences are the only useful data for constructing accurate cladograms of the species.

D) Amino acid sequence differences are the result of mutations caused by different selection pressures experienced by the species.

Best Way to Prepare for the OST: READ MORE!

Promote Reading at Home- Ways Parents Can Help
You are your student's first and most important teacher, there are multiple ways that you can help foster the importance of reading at home and in return help your student to become a more confident scholar.
1. Make sure your student sees you reading
2. Take  the time to read every day, it  is very important
3. Read aloud to your student

4. Use your local newspaper to encourage your child to read.  Try a scavenger hunt!

5. Map it Out

6. Give books as gifts
7. Make reading a privilege
8. If you are not a good reader, you can still encourage your children
9. Encourage a wide variety of reading
10. Follow your child’s interests

11. Stop and reflect
12.  Encourage your student to read for pleasure
13. If possible, subscribe to a variety of educational magazines
As adults, we can help to foster the importance of reading and the enjoyment of it as well.
