Learning for Mastery

The quickest way to understanding Mastery is to watch this very brief video-

What is Mastery Learning: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=l83Rgrjn_Lk

Mastery is the belief that all children can learn if they are provided with the appropriate learning conditions. In Mastery learning, “the students are helped to master each learning unit before proceeding to a more advanced learning task” “The mastery learning method divides subject matter into units that have predetermined objectives or unit expectations. Students, alone or in groups, work through each unit in an organized fashion. Students must demonstrate mastery on unit material, typically 80%, before moving on to new material. Students who do not achieve mastery receive remediation through tutoring, peer monitoring, small group discussions, or additional homework. Additional time for learning is prescribed for those requiring remediation. Students continue the cycle of studying and testing until mastery is met.

Understanding student Report Cards

Since report cards have come out, we have received several questions on how to understand them. Please take a look at the attached “Understanding Your Report Card” document, for a quick guide to reading.

Earning Credit in a Mastery-Based System

OSTs, Mastery Learning, and Report cards are all pieces of the puzzle. Earning Credit in a Mastery-Based Environment is much different than any other environment and only you can decide if this route works for you. To help you understand, please view the attached Presentation so you have a complete understanding of this process!

Ohio State Tests (OST) requirements

The Ohio State Testing requirements for graduation have changed many times over the past 10 years. If you have a student who graduated a few years ago, the requirements now are very different then they were in the past.

Students must earn a cumulative score of 18 points using seven end-of-course state tests.

To ensure students are well rounded, they must earn a minimum of four points in math, four points in English and six points across science and social studies.

End-of-course exams are:

Algebra I – 9th Grade

Geometry – 10th Grade

Biology– 10th Grade

American History – 10th Grade

American government – 11th Grade

English I – 9th Grade

English II– 10th Grade
