Vote with your Voice

Big Idea

Even though 16 & 17 year olds can’t legally vote in the U.S., their voice matters, after all, they are affected by laws that are passed and the officials who are elected. Students will find the truth and fight for justice through an analysis of what is happening in the world today and what the politicians running for office truly stand for. Students will learn about government surveillance, politics, privacy, and data mining, choosing for themselves what’s right. Students will gain a contextual understanding through a class reading of 1984. In Engineering, each class will design and build a sound booth for recording. Finally, students will take what they’ve learned to write songs about justice intended to influence and persuade in the upcoming election. Students will pick a hot-button political issue and write a song about it.

English: Speaking and Listening Outcomes: presentation of findings; adapt speech to a variety of contexts, Analyze multiple interpretations of a story, Analyze non-fiction US Seminal Texts, Participate and Collaborate in meaningful discussions

History: Voting law, voting rights, government exploitation/protection, intrusion vs freedom. Minority laws.

Science: Nuclear Chemistry (isotopes, decay), Gas Laws, Stoichiometry (moles, limiting reagents, percent yield), finishing up chemical reactions

Math: Trigonometry and periodic functions/ concepts

Engineering: New Engineering Design and Development benchmarks

Build a sound booth

Learn about sound waves; frequency and amplitude. Learn about encryption

Find the truth and fight for justice

Learn about rhyme scheme, writing lyrics, and write and produce their own song

Learn how science, technology, engineering and/or math impact or are impacted by public policy
